My Process

Below is a high level summary of my general process for a large website projects. Please note, this is the nuclear option and can kick on for several months. If your needs are for a lighter web solution, there are many other approaches we can take to get you up and running in only a few days/weeks.

Phase 1: Strategy & Kick Off

In the Kick-Off phase, we align on the project plan, set timelines, and establish regular check-ins. I'll gather your design inspirations and confirm key style guidelines, ensuring we're synced on colours, fonts, and imagery. We’ll also discuss your site's requirements in detail, which leads to the creation of an initial sitemap and wireframe for your review.

What’s a sitemap and wireframe?

A wireframe is a raw, unstyled mockup of the sitemap, used to help us (i) conceptualise and clarify information hierarchy, and (ii) give direction and clarity to our content requirements.

Phase 2: Content

In the Content phase, I lay the groundwork by preparing a base foundation of website copy from all available resources, ensuring alignment with SEO best practices. Quality control is key; I use tools like Flesch Kincaid to maintain readability and adhere to your defined Tone of Voice guidelines. All content is consolidated in a Master Content Document shared via Google Docs. Once this foundation is set, it's over to you to enrich and finalise the content across the site.

Tip: Be Prepared!

Depending on the number of pages required and complexity of CMS collections involved, filling out the content could be quite extensive and time-consuming.

Phase 3: Concept

During the Concept phase, I craft several initial design concepts for a key page using your style guide and any design inspiration identified earlier. Each concept includes various colour combinations for your review, allowing for feedback and refinement. Final design decisions are consolidated to guide the building of the remainder of the site.

Hot Tip: Pinterest

Good web designers don’t hang out in Google Images, but a lot of them are on Pinterest! Why not start gathering inspiration now? Jump in and search for ‘{your industry} website’.

Phase 4: Build

In the Build phase, I turn the approved content and design concepts into reality on the selected CMS. This includes configuring all site interactive elements, CMS collections, and necessary integrations such as payment processors and EDMs. A collaborative QA round ensures all functional and non-functional aspects meet our standards before going live.

Phase 5: Launch

The Launch phase involves winding down the old site, cleaning up DNS records, and setting up the new site with minimal downtime. Key actions include configuring 301 redirects, submitting the sitemap for Google indexing, and setting up Google Analytics and Search Console. A final SEO audit ensures everything is optimised before the official site goes live, followed by a comprehensive handover workshop and a month of complimentary technical support (within reason).

Note: Website Migrations

Any changes to your DNS/Google Console will inevitably lower organic traffic in the short run. However, utilising keyword and performance optimisations as well as a complimentary post-launch SEO audit, you can rest assured that your organic traffic will be improved in the long run.
